Has period underwear ever come up in conversation with your friends? These menstrual slips are becoming increasingly popular—and for good reason. They’re far more sustainable than disposable products like pads and tampons, and unlike menstrual cups or discs, they can even help make your period more comfortable.
We’re convinced. But despite all the benefits, there are still plenty of misconceptions about period underwear. It’s time to set the record straight.
1. Period Underwear Is Unhygienic
Many people believe that wearing period underwear all day or overnight is unhygienic. The reality? It’s the opposite.
Thanks to built-in protective layers with antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, period underwear locks in menstrual fluid and prevents bacterial growth.
So why does this myth persist? Because periods are still wrongly viewed as something “gross.” In reality, menstruation is a completely natural process and a sign of the incredible things the body can do.
If you’re still not convinced, our Leakproof Minerva is made from natural bamboo fibers, which are naturally antibacterial—providing even more protection.
2. Period Underwear Can’t Hold Much Fluid
Every period is different—some people have light flows, others heavier ones. That’s why there are plenty of different models of period underwear, tailored to varying needs.
On average, a person loses between 30-80 ml of blood per cycle—about 2 to 6 tablespoons. As a comparison: Our Leakproof Athena can hold up to 25 ml, which is equivalent to four regular tampons.
For heavier flows, period underwear can be used as backup protection alongside tampons or menstrual cups. And at night, it’s a great alternative to tampons, which aren’t recommended for extended wear.
3. Period Underwear Is Complicated to Use
Some believe period underwear is tricky to use—but in reality, it’s easier than traditional menstrual products.
Wear, rinse, wash, and reuse.
After wearing it, simply rinse it with cold water and toss it into the washing machine with your regular laundry. That’s it.
If you have a heavy flow or need to change on the go, our Super Leakproof Gaia with detachable side closures is a great option. It allows for a quick change without undressing completely.
Alternatively, you can wear period underwear as backup protection alongside other products for extra security.
4. You Can’t Wash It With Other Laundry
This myth refuses to die. But here’s the truth: After the first rinse in cold water, no blood remains in the underwear. This means you can wash it with your regular clothes—no stains, no discoloration.
In fact, you can safely wash period underwear at 30°C, as modern detergents are effective at 20°C and above. It’s gentle on fabrics and better for the environment.
5. It Feels Wet and Uncomfortable
One of the biggest concerns people have is that period underwear will feel wet or uncomfortable after a few hours. But that’s not the case.
High-quality period underwear is made with multiple layers that quickly absorb and trap fluid. The top layer pulls moisture away from the skin, keeping you dry and comfortable all day long.
